Street sweepers get to work to clear mounds of rubbish in Notting Hill

Thousands of people enjoyed the glitter and glamour of Notting Hill Carnival over the Bank Holiday weekend, but now comes the part they all want to avoid.

Street sweepers have been out in force overnight to clear up the mess left behind by the revellers as the waste builds up in the trendy area.

Piles of rubbish have been left next to trees and lampposts in bin bags, but others simply discarded beer cans, plastic cups and even pineapples in the road.

Council staff have been pictured hard at work with their brushes collecting all the rubbish together with some clearing up the mess while the party was still going.

‘Hippy crack’ canisters were pictured strewn about the streets of Notting Hill alongside bottles and cans as festival goers openly took illegal substances, with some doing so in front of police officers

Police were also pictured taking a break after an eventful weekend in which one person was stabbed, 385 people were arrested and 69 offensive weapons were seized including 49 knives, acid and a taser.

But despite the huge police presence, brazen festival-goers were pictured openly taking drugs in front of officers as they partied in the streets of west London for the second day in a row.

Around two million revellers attended the huge bash, which was opened by first-ever carnival ambassador and former X Factor winner Alexandra Burke.

Amazing costumes were on show as thousands danced in the streets and floats made their way along the roads.

At 3pm yesterday the music stopped for a 72-second silence in tribute to the 72 people who died following the fire at Grenfell Tower in June 2017.

The tower block is within half-a-mile of the parade route.

The silence was broken at the Rampage sound stage, just off Colville Square, with cheers, whistles and the booming voice of the late Aretha Franklin singing Respect.

In total 373 people were arrested by Met Police officers while a further 12 were detained by British Transport Police.

In a statement issued on Monday evening, Notting Hill Carnival Commander Dave Musker hailed the event as ‘one of the best in the world’ but said the festival was marred by the violent stabbing and the news that 30 police officers were injured in the line of duty.

A total of 156 people were arrested for drug offences, 69 for carrying weapons, 18 for assaulting a police officer, 12 for assault and nine for sexual offences.

The bank holiday weekend event was being policed by the highest number of officers in six years.

Almost 7,000 officers, some from the Metropolitan Police’s newly formed Violent Crime Task Force, patrolled Monday’s event to ‘combat the threat of violent crime’.

This is up from the 6,100 on-duty officers at the less busy family day on Sunday.
