Strewth! Australia’s most iconic Outback pub is for sale

Australia’s most iconic Outback pub has hit the market for the first time in years.

The Birdsville Hotel is a bucket-list visit for tourists and has long been celebrated as one of Australia’s favourite watering holes.

Visitors are willing to travel the distance to say they’ve enjoyed a beverage at the pub, 1600 kilometres west of Brisbane and close to South Australia’s border.

Manager of the pub Ben Fullagar said the owners, who acquired the property in 1980, had ‘done the hard yards,’ the Courier Mail reported.

‘They have done a huge amount of work over 38 years to build the brand and totally rebuild the entire premises and they feel it’s time for new blood to come in and become as passionate about outback tourism and Birdsville as what they have been,’ he said.

Mr Fullgar said the owners had cemented the pub as a bucket list place to visit.

The sale of the pub is being managed by Knight Frank and Steele & Associates Hotel Brokers who anticipate international expression of interest.

The advertisement on realcommercial.com.au reads: ‘The Birdsville Hotel is steeped in history and has played a fascinating, yet important, part in the exploration and settlement of Australia’s desert country.’

Knight Frank’s Guy Bennett said: ‘The owners have done an amazing job and what’s on offer will appeal to a very broad potential buyer pool,’ he said.

The pub had previously hit the market in 2007 but a $5million proposition didn’t persuade the owners to sell.

The current offer is the hotel, its 27 motel rooms and liquor license as well as staff, equipment, stock in trade, intellectual property and the business name.

It also includes two detached residences, an aviation fuel supply business operated by the current hotel owners and an industrial block.

The pub is at the heart of Birdsville and is treated to thousands of visitors during the Birdsville Races and the Big Red Bash.

For the past three years, the Birdsville Pub has won the Tourism and Events Queensland award for the best outback pub.

Interested buyers should submit an expression of interest before the campaign ends on September 20.
