An interior design student who faked insurance claims for £14,000 worth of ‘lost’ electronics has avoided jail.

Alison Ntim, 23, of Archway, tried to claim for various gadgets including a camera, laptops and an iPhone.

She told insurers that the devices had gone missing during a university study trip to Venice.

Ntim used the details of a fellow student to file a bogus claim and then continued the scam by inventing five more people.

Insurers become suspicious and alerted police – with detectives discovering that three of those named had not even been on the 2014 London Metropolitan University trip.

The interior design student received payouts on half of the claims before officers intervened, the Standard reports.

Ntim typed out the claims forms so officials would not be able to recognise her handwriting – but was caught after putting her own address and bank details for the payout.

She also sent blurry receipts as well as a copy of her own boarding pass as proof.

Ntim, who is now working as a freelance interior designer, admitted fraud offences last year. She was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 18 months.
