Students on some college campuses can now enter buildings with just a swipe of their Apple Watch or iPhone.
Apple said Tuesday it’s rolling out contact-free student ID cards at three universities, including Duke University, the University of Alabama and the University of Oklahoma.
The feature was first announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June but are just beginning to launch at select schools.

Apple plans to add more universities to its roster in the near future.
Johns Hopkins, Santa Clara and Temple Universities will add the capability by the end of this school year.
Students add their ID card to the Apple Wallet app on the iPhone and the Apple Watch in order to use it around campus.
They just hold an iPhone or Apple Watch near a reader anywhere physical ID cards are used on and off campus, according to Apple.
The digital ID cards use near-field communication readers to gain access to dorms, dining halls, libraries and the gym.
They can also use the digital ID cards to pay for laundry, coffee or lunch.

‘When we launched Apple Pay, we embarked on a goal to replace the physical wallet,’ Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services, said in a statement.
‘By adding transit, loyalty cards and contactless ticketing we have expanded the capabilities of Wallet beyond payments, and we’re now thrilled to be working with campuses on adding contactless student ID cards to bring customers even more easy, convenient and secure experiences.’
Apple Wallet is also used to store credit and debit cards, concert tickets, store cards, as well as boarding passes, among other things.

However, the Apple Wallet cannot hold a drivers license, making it likely that people will be tethered to their physical wallet for some time.
Apple Wallet has grown in popularity since it was introduced as Passbook in 2012.
The firm has been adding more and more uses for the app in recent years, including a recent push to let users load their tickets for sporting events onto the app.
What’s more, they hope to let sporting event attendees use Apple Pay to purchase concessions and food once they get into the venue.
HOW DOES APPLE PAY WORK?
Apple Pay is the firm’s mobile payment and virtual wallet service.
It allows customers to make payments using an iPhone, Watch, iPad or Mac.
It works alongside most banks and most major credit and debit cards providers including Visa, MasterCard and American Express.
To use the services, users must link their device, security details and bank card.
To do this, open Wallet, go to settings and find Wallet and Apple Pay in there.

Before it is activated, the device needs to be authenticated by the bank.
Each bank has different protocols, but their security measures will have to be passed before Apple Pay is fully verified.
After your card is verified, you can tap Next and start using Apple Pay.
Apple Pay requires the Near Field Communication (NFC) antenna and Touch ID or Face ID on iPhone 6 and later to work.
Once set up, you can hold your device near a contactless terminal to authorise a payment.
For most iPhones double pressing the home button will bring up the Apple Pay function, which will use your fingerprint to confirm the transaction.
On the iPhoneX, users must press the sleep/wake button twice to invoke Apple Pay.
