A student has filmed the shocking moment when the living room ceiling in his university house dramatically collapsed.

Alan Phillips, 20, who has four housemates said he was ‘chilling out’ upstairs at around 3 pm yesterday when one of his friends heard the crash.

He said he went to inspect when he saw a crack appearing so he pulled out his phone.

He told Mail Online: ‘We were chilling out upstairs playing video games when my housemate heard a bang downstairs.

‘A bit of the ceiling collapsed and I went in to inspect then we heard it cracking so we got out of the way, I took out my phone because I thought ‘Oh sh*t it’s going to go!’

‘It literally happened 30 minutes after the plumber left.

All of a sudden the cracks got bigger, and before we knew it the ceiling had caved in.’

He and his four housemates, all geology students at University of Portsmouth, had just moved in to the property a week prior before complaining to their estate agents about a leak.

The boys are all due to start lectures for third year on Monday but will have to wait up to a week for the ceiling to be repaired, according to their estate agents.

The 20-year-old from Sittingbourne, Kent said a plumber came around to turn off the students’ water and 30 minutes after he left the dramatic collapse took place.

He said: ‘I laughed because I found the experience quite surreal, plus I caught it on camera which was hard to believe, I usually see the funny side of things.’

He added that his estate agent acted fast to send around someone to clean the substantial debris.

One of two bathrooms in the private let is situated above the damaged ceiling and the students have been told not to use it for fear of even more leakage.

He and his housemates are not without water and have access to an alternative bathroom.

Despite still having water, the collapse left old-looking exposed beams and loose wires hanging in the students’ living room.

Alan said he and his housemates haven’t yet discussed compensation with the estate agents who charge the occupants £340 each per month for the property.
