Thousands of foodies around the world have voted for their favourite cake flavours – and Australians have controversially selected banana bread as their go-to treat.
The survey, carried out by range cooker brand Leisure, studied 249 different cakes to find out which type of sweet treats were best-loved by countries across the globe.
Researchers used Google keyword search to determine the sort of cakes people from different countries searched for to establish an ‘average monthly search volume for each country’.
The data showed the most searched for cake in Australia is ‘banana cake’ – in this case referring to banana bread rather than a traditional iced cake.

Researchers also uncovered the world’s number one favourite was chocolate cake.
This was determined after the term ‘chocolate cake’ was recorded as having been searched for 394,050 times in a month.
The statistics also showed 81 countries across the globe searched the term over the 30 days.

‘Whether people are searching for recipes, where to purchase different cakes or a cake’s origin, one thing is for certain; these statistics show we are a world of curious cake lovers,’ said Leisure’s marketing manager Gino Grossi.
Coming in at second place for most searched for dessert was a red velvet cake (a crimson or scarlet coloured chocolate layer cake).
The cake recorded 322,310 monthly searches and was revealed to be especially popular in countries like Greece, Peru, The Bahamas and Brazil.
In Europe, the cake was heralded number one, with 14 countries declaring the treat their official favourite.
The study found carrot cake took out the top spot among Canadian cake enthusiasts while Americans and Russians both rated Pineapple Upside Down Cake as their number one baked dessert.
