A fashion stylist has shared the four ways to check if a colour suits you when buying clothes, as well as her hack to make sure you’re wearing flattering cuts.
Melissa Murgana, from Melbourne, said that with spring around the corner, there are ‘lots of new colours’ to explore.
But it can be hard to know whether a shade you haven’t worn before will suit you when you’re under pressure to make a decision in a shop.

Melissa said you need to test outfits up against your chin and face rather than your neck to check that they suit you, as your neck is often a different colour (pictured)
1. Test colours against your chin and face as well as your eyes
Many people assume that they need to think about their eye colour when it comes to shopping for clothes.
But Melissa said you need to test outfits up against your chin and face as well to check that they suit you.
‘Colours that suit your skin will be those that lighten your face and really turn the whites of your eyes white – which makes your eye colour pop,’ Melissa posted on Instagram.
The stylist added that you shouldn’t test shades up against your neck, as this is often a different colour to your face and chin.
The second thing you need to think about is how your skin reacts to the sun, like does it burn or tan (pictured)
2. Think about how your skin reacts to the sun
The second thing you need to think about is how your skin reacts to the sun.
‘There are some generalisations that work here – such as skin that’s paler and burns easily is cool-toned, while olive skin or a complexion that tans quite easily is considered warm,’ Melissa said.
But it is also worth considering that a lot of women are both cool and warm-toned.
If you’re struggling to see if you’re cool, warm-toned or both, Melissa recommends checking the colour of your wrist veins to see if they are blue purplish or blue green (pictured)
3. Check the colour of your wrist veins
If you’re struggling to see if you’re cool, warm-toned or both, Melissa recommends checking the colour of your wrist veins.
‘If they are blue or purplish, then you are likely cool in your skin tone,’ she said.
‘Whereas, if your veins are more green than blue, then you likely have warm undertones.’
If you’re someone with blue/green veins, then you could be neutral – so you can wear both cool and warm tones.
If you are still unsure, there is one last thing you can do; you can check the neutral colours you want to buy against the ones you already have to see how they work (pictured)
4. Check the neutral garments you already own
If you are still unsure, there is one last thing you can do.
‘Check the neutral garments you want to buy against the ones you already own and see how they work,’ Melissa said.
‘Then you should know the shades of colours that suit YOUR skin.’
Thousands who saw Melissa’s video were impressed and said they couldn’t wait to put her tips into action.
‘Now this is awesome advice, thanks for sharing,’ one commenter posted.
‘This is such useful education,’ another added.
