Suits fans were undoubtedly disappointed when Meghan Markle failed to make a cameo on the series finale of the USA legal drama, but it wasn’t because she turned down the opportunity — she wasn’t even asked.
The 38-year-old Duchess of Sussex played the paralegal-turned-lawyer Rachel Zane on the show’s first seven seasons until she retired from acting ahead of her wedding to Prince Harry. Her new life as a royal was admittedly part of the reason the show’s creator Aaron Kosh didn’t feel comfortable asking her to reprise her role.
‘I thought about asking, and I thought about even using audio footage that we have to come up with something, and in the end I didn’t ask,’ he told Deadline after Wednesday night’s season nine finale.
Say what? Suits creator Aaron Kosh has admitted he never asked Meghan Markle to reprise her role as Rachel Zane (pictured) for the show’s series finale, which aired on Wednesday
Honest: The producer said he wanted to ‘respect her new life’ and not put her in that position. Markle is currently touring South Africa with Prince Harry and their son, Archie
‘I just thought, I’m going to respect her new life and not put her in the position of having to ask. We decided not to put her in that position so I never asked.’
Though Markle didn’t make an appearance, her character was featured heavily in an emotional montage that aired at the end of the episode.
‘I wrote that thing into the script. I am a nostalgic person. We talked about it. We weren’t sure it would work, and we weren’t sure how much to put in,’ Kosh explained.
‘There were certain people that thought we shouldn’t do it. I was open to hearing that maybe we shouldn’t do it because we did have a lot of endings. All those people, when they actually saw it, decided they wanted it in, they liked it,’ he added.
‘Even though Harvey (Gabriel Macht) was not present for every single scene in this flashback, the idea is that Harvey is in his office, thinking about his time in the firm, about all that he has been through over all of the years.
‘For me it adds to the good vibe of the show.’
Memories: Ahead of the finale, Kosh paid tribute to Markle on Twitter by sharing a throwback photo of them together
Surprise! The writers also couldn’t resist referencing the royal family with a subtle nod to Markle’s husband on the final episode
Hilarious: Earlier in the season, the show poked fun at Markle’s royal life with a comment about ‘how good’ her character Rachel is doing
The producer also paid tribute to Markle on Twitter by sharing a throwback photo of them together, writing: ‘Young Meghan Markle and Korsh…’
When Markle left the show, writers had Rachel and her husband Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) move to Seattle to start their own law offices, but her character’s memory was still alive and well in the finale — even if she wasn’t in it.
During a scene with her character’s father, Robert Zane (Wendell Pierce), a photo of him with his TV daughter was visible on his desk.
The writers also couldn’t resist referencing the royal family with a subtle nod to Markle’s husband, Prince Harry.
‘You’re not the prince of England,’ Harvey tells Louis Ritt (Rick Hoffman) later on in the episode.
The series ended with Harvey and his now-wife Donna (Sarah Rafferty) planning to leave New York to work with Mike and Rachel in Seattle.
It wasn’t the first time the show has poked fun at Markle’s new life.
Surprise: Actor Patrick J. Adams, 38, who starred as Markle’s love interest in the legal drama, shared behind-the-scenes snapshots of the former actress on set ahead of the finale
Famous shot: This image of Markle lying on the floor with her feet up in the air was one of the few photos that were previously seen
Off duty: Several of the photos show the duchess alone, including one of her dressed down in an tank top and sunglasses while standing in front of her trailer
When Adams’ character Mike returned to the show earlier in the season, viewers got to enjoy a hilarious reference to her success when he was asked how she was doing.
‘If I told you how good, you probably wouldn’t believe me,’ he said.
The official Suits Twitter account shared a GIF of the scene with a wink emoji at the time, writing: ‘Turns out Rachel is doing REALLY well.’
Unsurprisingly, fans loved the joke and took to the comments of the tweet to praise the show’s writers for the clever reference to the beloved character.
The season finale aired just a few days after Adams took to Instagram to share a series of posts featuring behind-the-scenes photos of the cast — including previously unseen pictures of Markle on set.
The candid shots show the former actress relaxing between takes and playfully posing for the camera.
Rainy day: One sweet Instagram snap shows Markle smiling from beneath an umbrella
Get it? When captioning this shot, Adams simply wrote ‘RZ,’ a reference to her character Rachel Zane’s initials
Markle is pictured with Adams (back, center), Rafferty (front center), Gabriel Macht (bottom left), Rick Hoffman (top left), and Gina Torres (right)
The images capture the close relationship between Markle, Adams, and their fellow cast members Sarah Rafferty, Gabriel Macht, Rick Hoffman, and Gina Torres, all of whom were guests at the royal wedding in May last year.
In one photo, Markle and Rafferty can be seen pouting for the camera. Another shows the group smiling from ear to ear while taking a selfie.
Also pictured is Abigail Spencer, another Suits alum who became a close friend of the Duchess of Sussex and attended her New York baby shower in February.
‘The best family you could ask for,’ Adams captioned one of the posts.
Other images show Markle posing in a cozy bathrobe and pair of high heels and holding a clear umbrella over her head on a raining day.
When captioning one photo of the duchess, Adams referred to her Suits character, simply writing: ‘RZ.’
There was, however, one snapshot that had been seen before. The image shows Markle lying on the floor with her feet in the air while Rafferty checks her phone on the sofa.
