Sunshine Coast road smash: Young mechanics helping fix a broken down bus are killed

Two young mechanics, 22 and 25, have died after being mown down by a car after pulling over to help a broken down bus. 

Lleyton Bartlett and a friend, who is yet to be identified, were struck on the Nambour Connection Road in Woombye, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, at about 3.30pm on Thursday.

Paramedics rushed the pair to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in critical conditions. Both tragically died. 

Mr Bartlett’s shattered mother Lisa shared a tribute to her son on Friday.

‘Rest in peace my son,’ she said on social media. ‘Until we meet again. We will hold you in our hearts until we can hold you in heaven. 

‘With all our love Mum, Dad & Jai Bartlett.’

Family and friends flocked to the comments section to express their condolences.

‘I’m am so incredibly sorry, I can’t even begin to imagine what you must be going through right now. Devastated for you all & holding you in my thoughts x,’ one friend wrote.

Another said: ‘We woke up this morning to this news … absolutely shocked!’

‘Words can not express this news. With oceans and oceans of love and support at this sad time. What a beautiful young man.’

Mick from the Maroochydore Hockey Club also left a heartfelt tribute to the young man on social media.

‘Our sincerest condolences go to the Bartlett family and friends after the passing of Lleyton in that tragic accident at Woombye,’ he wrote.

‘Lleyton was a Maroochydore junior, senior, and Sunshine Coast rep player up to only two years ago.

‘I know he had many friends among the club so let’s all look after each other.’

Shane Kropp from Queensland Ambulance Service told Seven News the scene of the accident was ‘chaotic’ and the men had ‘life-threatening injuries’.

‘The patients’ condition was they had what we call multi-system trauma,’ he said.

‘Advanced care and critical care paramedics were on board and treated them accordingly.’ 

Two northwest-bound lanes were closed immediately following the accident. They were reopened at 6.30pm on Thursday evening. 

The 43-year-old woman who was driving the car is assisting police with inquiries.  

She was not injured in the crash.

‘The Forensic Crash Unit and Workplace Health and Safety are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident,’ Queensland Police said in a statement. 

Anyone who has information or dashcam footage is urged to contact police.
