Surrey cashpoint thieves use digger to rip out ATM machine

 Thieves used a stolen digger to rip a cashpoint from a wall in Surrey – the second of such raids in the area in three days, police say.

British Transport Police were called to Haslemere Train Station at 5.15am on Saturday after the ATM was stolen, leaving the building severely damaged.

It came only days after another cash machine was stolen from a petrol station in Gomshall on Thursday.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: ‘An ATM has been stolen, so a cash point has been ripped off the wall.’

‘We’ve attended the incident but there was no trace of a suspect at the scene and we are investigating.’

The digger at the scene belonged to Marsh Plan Hire in Havant and it was rented to a client who reported the vehicle stolen at around 3.15am, said a company spokesman.

They added: ‘I actually had a phone call from a client in horror who said it was stolen.’

The station ticket office and forecourt are currently closed but train services remain unaffected, according to South Western Railway (SWR).

‘The ticket office and forecourt will remain closed after this whilst contractors inspect the building for any structural damage,’ a SWR spokesman said.
