So which destination is the TV adventurer’s most memorable?

Here he talks about the challenges he faced climbing Mount Everest, why Whitby Abbey is his favourite place in the UK and more…

Most memorable place travelled?

Mount Everest.

That sounds plausible . . .

Yes — I had to tackle life-or-death situations that pushed me to my limits, both mentally and physically. It will stay with me for ever.

How would you describe the people?

All the Sherpas were so kind and knowledgeable about the landscape. I had the most amazing Sherpa. We met at the very start of the trip and he welcomed me into his home. I couldn’t have done the trip without him and he saved my life a couple of times.

Favourite place in the UK?

Whitby Abbey in North Yorkshire. It’s such a scenic area where you can escape the day-to-day realities of life. I love to go there with my family and spend quality time with my wife and kids.

Most memorable meal?

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in London.

What do you never travel without?

I take my Garmin watch everywhere.

What’s your idea of holiday hell?

Lying in the sun. I must explore where I am — normally with a child on my back and another one on my shoulders.

In which country do you feel most at home?

Wherever my family is.
