Susan Carland opens up on her relationship with Waleed Aly

Susan Carland has revealed intimate details about her relationship with television presenter Waleed Aly.

Dr Carland, who has been married to The Project host for 15 years, shared the couple are as much in love today, as they were when they first walked down the aisle.

In a recent interview with Elle, the 38-year-old said that despite getting married when they were both ‘ridiculously young’, the pair’s relationship has gone from strength to strength.

‘I guess I assumed you love each other when you get married and then as you get old you kind of tolerate each other, but it’s been the opposite,’ she said.

While Dr Carland is a much-respected academic, lauded for her many achievements, the author and gender studies specialist also admitted that she, like many women, struggles with self-doubt.

 ‘I’ve been given opportunities that I felt were far beyond my capabilities.

‘But I heard this great piece of advice: if the person who knows thinks you can do it, you can probably do it.’ 

Although the outspoken feminist advocates for claiming ‘your place at the table’ Dr Carland also touched on the difficult experience of coming out as Muslim at age 19.

Speaking previously, Dr Carland revealed that after embracing Islam as her chosen religion she began wearing a hijab immediately – a decision that was alarming for friends and family.

She also said she was ‘terrified’ to tell loved ones.

‘I was terrified, absolutely terrified about telling people. My family, my mum in particular. And my friends.’

While Dr Carland admits she has grappled with converting to the religion, the prominent Muslim stands by her decision.

‘I was so worried about telling people, because I didn’t know how they’d react.

‘I assumed they would react negatively, and most people did.’

‘But the reality is I do believe this.’
