Suspected drug dealers arrested with cannabis crops at Mount Rankin

Two teenage boys and two men were arrested and suspected of harvesting cannabis on a rural property near Bathurst where a crop worth $2million was found growing from tents.   

The large-scale cultivation of cannabis and operation networks within the drug trade has been part of an ongoing investigation by detectives from the State Crime Command’s Drug and Firearms Squad since late last year.

The rural property at Mount Rankin was searched where officers found large amounts of cannabis with a street value of almost $2million on Thursday morning.

A total of 60kg of cannabis head, coming from 832 plants of varying maturity and 130 harvested plants, were found on the site.  

Two teenage boys and two men, aged 41 and 72, were arrested and taken to Bathurst Police Station.

The teenage boys were charged with cultivating a commercial quantity of a prohibited plant and commercial drug supply.

Both were refused bail to appear at a children’s court on Friday.

A 41-year-old man, who is also an Italian National, and a 72-year-old man were also charged with cultivate commercial quantity of prohibited plant and commercial drug supply.

Both men were also refused bail to appear at Lithgow Local Court today. 

‘Our Cannabis Team has worked long and hard – in less than ideal conditions – throughout the growing season and prevented more than $16 million of cannabis from hitting the streets,’ Drug and Firearms Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Peter McErlain said.

A rural clandestine laboratory found to be manufacturing MDMA was also found near the same area as was part of three major police operations yesterday. 

Despite the operation’s success, Detective Superintendent McErlain said police ‘still need to tackle the issue of demand’.

‘We need the support and assistance of the community to break the cycle of addiction and stop these substances from being a plague on our community,’ he said.
