Lightning has struck a major Sydney train line causing huge delays for commuters travelling home. 

Sydenham train station in the city’s inner west was damaged by multiple lightning strikes as severe thunderstorms lash the area, Sydney Trains confirmed on Thursday evening.

‘Services are delayed due to severe thunderstorms and multiple lightning strikes damaging equipment at Sydenham,’ a spokesperson tweeted.

‘Stopping patterns may change at short notice. Please listen to announcements, check information screens and use transport apps for the latest service info.’

One commuter stuck at the station told Daily Mail Australia it was ‘chaos’. 

‘Poor Cityrail staff have no idea what to say. Everyone hammering them, it’s complete chaos.’ 

One announcement heard on the platform said: ‘Services suspended until further notice due to infrastructure damage caused by lightning strikes around Sydenham.’ 

Trains have been delayed in both directions out of the station with crews responding to the damage.
