An Australian woman has been called out after she criticised Sydney Airport’s new sign for being ‘woke’.

Kobie Thatcher took to Twitter to post a picture of the airport sign on Saturday, which has been changed ahead of World Pride that starts on February 17th.

The sign reads ‘SYD’ and is decked out in the colours of the progress LGBTQ+ flag with the letter S in pink and blue to depict trans people.

There are also black and brown stripes to depict LGBTQ people from an ethnic minority background.

Ms Thatcher slammed the sign online.

‘International travellers are now greeted with a woke welcome arriving at Sydney airport,’ she said.

‘Couldn’t we just have a neutral sign instead of another unnecessary display of virtue signalling?’

She told Daily Mail Australia that she had received backlash following the post: ‘I think Australia has always been a welcoming and accepting place for people of all sexual orientations.

‘I think many people, however, are getting tired of seeing these types of displays that are becoming increasingly common and really only represent a small percentage of our population.

‘I have received some criticism for speaking out against this, but I think it is important for the majority to stand up and push back against this woke, virtue-signalling ideology that has become so prevalent in our society in recent years.’

Her post triggered an avalanche of responses, with some agreeing with her while others dismissed her concerns.

One supporter said: ‘This country is totally woke.’

Another said: ‘It’s probably good to let them know what they are in for but I agree it’s not appropriate.’

While a third asked: ‘Why do we have a welcome sign pertaining to one small section of the community? And even half of them are either not fussed, or embarrassed by it. Appealing to a fringe segment of society is the new ‘diversity’.’

However, she also received a flood of criticism from Australians who support the sign.

One critic replied to her tweet: ‘Grow up. Do you even know what “being woke” is?’

Another said: ‘It probably means a lot to young LGBTQI+ plus young people struggling to be themselves.’

While a third pointed out: ‘Sydney is literally hosting it’s largest event since the 2000 Olympics, World Pride! Surely you can understand why the airport may want to welcome attendees?’

A fourth added: ‘It probably means a lot to young LGBTQI+ plus young people struggling to be themselves.

A fifth declared: ‘Sydney is literally hosting it’s largest event since the 2000 Olympics, World Pride! Surely you can understand why the airport may want to welcome attendees!’

Another agreed saying: ‘Haven’t you got anything better to do than be offended by some colours welcoming the thousands of LGBTIQ+ travellers arriving in Sydney for World Pride?’

The WorldPride festival in Sydney will run from February 17 to March 5 featuring hundreds of events with organisers expecting about 500,000 partygoers to attend the celebrations.

The festival will coincide with the city’s 50th Australian Gay Pride Week, 45th Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras.

To mark the significant milestones the Sydney Harbour Bridge was lit up in the colours of the Rainbow Flag for New Year’s Eve fireworks.

During the festival the bridge will be closed to traffic to allow for a Pride March.

This will be the first time the bridge has closed since the World Youth Day celebrations in 2008.
