Sydney commuter chaos as hundreds left stranded after signal failure false alarm sparks major delays

A signal failure false alarm has caused public transport disruption across Sydney for a second consecutive Saturday in a row.

Delays and cancellations continued across the rail network throughout the day after the signal failure false alarm at Redfern, leaving many frustrated commuters stranded on platforms.

Sydney Trains engineers carried out essential safety checks following an earlier report of a signalling safety fault and confirmed no fault.

A blackout on Saturday afternoon also added to the chaos.

The T2 Inner West/Leppington line was one of the worst affected services.

‘Delays continue due to a signalling safety fault at Redfern earlier today. Services are running to an altered schedule between Liverpool and Leppington, with buses continuing to supplement these services. We recommend customers check real-time apps before travel,’ T2 Sydney Trains tweeted.

T1 Western, Airport and South line services were also disrupted.

Commuters were earlier warned that some Homebush services will terminate and commence from Ashfield, with T2 services making extra stops to supplement.

Angry passengers told 7 News that some western line trains terminated at Ashfield and that other services skipped stations.

A Transport for NSW spokesman apologised to commuters for the inconvenience.

‘Our services are recovering well from the earlier incident at Redfern. Regular services are continuing to operate across the network, including those for people attending special events tonight,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

‘Customers should continue to check mobile apps and transportnsw.info for the latest service updates.’

Buses are replacing ferry services in both directions between Parramatta and Rydalmere due to a low river tide.

Sydney Trains has urged customers travelling to the airport for flights or requiring urgent medical attention to see station staff for assistance.

Frustrated commuters publicly vented their anger on social media.

Another added:  ‘My train is stopped just before a platform at Macdonaldtown and I’ve just missed my connection at Redfern to get to work on time. This will be the third Saturday in a row that I’m late. Sort this out!’
