Sydney fire: Human remains found after huge blaze in Darlington near Redfern Station

  • Fire erupted just after 8am on Wednesday
  • Unit on third floor sparked blaze

Human remains have been found inside a unit after it burst into flames in Sydney near Redfern Station.

More than 30 firefighters were called to a multi-level apartment building on the corner of Abercrombie Street and Ivy Street in Darlington after it caught alight just after 8am on Wednesday. 

A dozen fire and rescue crews worked to control the blaze which sparked inside a unit on the third floor.

NSW Police Detective Superintendent Rod Hart confirmed the remains had been found in a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

The body is yet to be identified.

The intensity of the fire caused part of the building to collapse. 

Residents and those in neighbouring businesses were evacuated when the fire erupted, and it’s expected to be a few days before they can return home.

Lawson Street has been closed back to Redfern railway station. NSW Police are also at the scene.
