Sydney Harbour Bridge traffic chaos: roadworks ruining Saturday night plans for countless motorists

Traffic chaos as ‘THOUSANDS’ of cars are banked up on the Sydney Harbour Bridge: Commuters face HOURS-long delays after infuriating decision by council

  • Thousands of motorists were left stranded on the Sydney Harbour Bridge tonight
  • Roadworks meant those heading southbound into the city faced major delays
  • Cars were seen at complete standstill on Saturday evening with two-hour delays

Thousands of motorists have been left stranded on the Sydney Harbour bridge with roadworks sparking massive two-hour delays.

The traffic chaos has ruined the plans for many Sydneysiders heading southbound into the city from Manly on Saturday night, with traffic seen at a complete standstill.

Two lanes of the bridge will remain closed all weekend to make way for roadworks, with cars queuing back as far as the Spit Bridge in Manly.

One fed-up Sydney-syder said motorists were pulling all sorts of stunts to try and escape the gridlock.

‘The traffic is like nothing I’ve seen in my life … there are thousands of cars going nowhere,’ they told Daily Mail Australia.

‘Everyone’s gone rogue into the bus lane, the hold ups are next level and it’s during industrial action so public transport is already horrific.’

Many have blasted the city's decision to do major roadworks on a busy weekend night as 'ridiculous' (above, traffic at a standstill)

The resident said their parents had been stuck waiting on Military Road for an hour.

‘The roadworks have been so ridiculous lately I have no idea how they get away with it,’ they added.

Roadworks on the bridge mean motorists can travel at no more than 40 kilometres an hour.

Only one lane in each direction was scheduled to remain open amid the roadworks.

‘Who’s genius idea was it to do roadworks on the harbour bridge and tunnel at the same time on the same day? F***ing mental,’ one woman tweeted.

‘Just 2 lanes open on the Harbour Bridge going into the City AND Cahill closure [equals] chaos on Sydney’s roads and actual delays of 2 hours. Massive lines for public transport. Very poor planning,’ another said.

‘What on earth has been going on ALL DAY on the corridor between Manly and Harbour Bridge etc? Two hours from Manly to Cremorne. All main, secondary roads bumper to bumper,’ wrote another local.

The roadworks are scheduled to continue all day on Sunday, and overnight during the week.

The works coincided with widespread industrial action and strikes on Sydney’s train network.

Live Traffic New South Wales warned travellers to ‘expect significant delays’ amid the heavy traffic conditions.

Transport for New South Wales has been contacted for comment.

More to come.
