Sydney mum creates Smashcakes you can play and eat

Ever since she was eight years old, Kylene Lovat has always loved chocolate.

While the other children happily gobbled up birthday cake, she would only lick the icing off the top – yearning for something different.

Now a chocolatier in her own right, Kylene has created the perfect treat for chocaholics, lolly lovers, and those who want to play with their cake – and eat it too.

Kylene is the inventor of Smashcake, a ‘chocolate piñata’ – as she calls it – that is filled with a surprise inside that can only be accessed by giving the cake a whack or five.

The Sydney mum-of-two first came up with the idea in 2009 when a friend gifted her a chocolate box that was filled with lollies inside.

‘I looked at it and thought it would be novel to design it actually like a cake,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.

Kylene, now 44, made a couple of samples and took a cake to her son’s pre-school, where it was an instant hit.

‘I got orders right away,’ she said. ‘At the time it was something different that had never been seen before.’

The mum, who has been making chocolates as a hobby since she was nine, had been searching for a unique way to show off her lifelong passion.

‘I’m just a chocaholic,’ Kylene said. ‘I just love chocolate, it’s in my blood. If you cut me, I’d bleed chocolate.’

She realised Smashcake, which launches in Adelaide this week, was a creation that both adults and children could enjoy at a party.

‘A whole birthday cake never gets eaten, but these chocolate piñatas – they’re gone in two seconds flat,’ she said.

‘It’s something that everyone loves, and it’s not just for the kids, I’m doing them for weddings and adults now as well.’

The most popular Smashcake is the original, which features a dome-like shell that is completely made of chocolate.

Customers most often request the party mix, a combination of lollies, but Kylene has also been asked to fill her Smashcakes with all types of things.

Although she now gets orders for every kind of event and celebration, it's the children's parties she loves helping the most

Kylene said it is her clients who often push her to reinvent

'I've got the original range with the cupcakes and domes, but now I do a lot of creative designs as well,' she said

‘I’ve had money requests for graduation gifts, and for wedding Smashcakes the customers more often want things like truffle-centered chocolates,’ she said.

Kylene has made Darth Vader’s head and a giant tub of Vegemite, but it is the original Smashcake that remains the most popular.

And although she now gets orders for every kind of event and celebration, it’s the children’s parties she loves helping the most.

‘The Smashcakes are appreciated there the most,’ she said. ‘The reactions from the children are beautiful.’

And it’s children, specifically her two boys, that have been inspiring Kylene since the beginning.

‘Having destructive boys with destructive personalities gives you a great insight into what will work,’ she said with a laugh.

‘They’re my toughest critics, but my biggest fans. They’ll tell me if something can be improved on and advise me on the latest trends.’

And as her boys – now aged nine and 12 – have gotten older, they’ve also been able to help with the technical side of running a business, especially social media.

‘They’ve grown up with it,’ she said. ‘They probably don’t remember a life without Smashcakes.’
