Sydney traffic descends into chaos ahead of Christmas – with major routes gridlocked across the city

Commuters in Sydney have been urged to allow extra travel time as bumper-to-bumper traffic causes major delays across the city’s main roads.

A car broke down near the northern exit of the Sydney Harbour Tunnel at about 8.35am, leaving one of two lanes shut and significant congestion for northbound traffic.

Transport NSW advised drivers to plan for delays, although the vehicle has since been cleared from the tunnel.

Meanwhile, heavy traffic has also been reported on the Anzac Bridge, with delays stretching from Drummoyne across the Anzac and Iron Cove Bridges through Barangaroo and Rozelle.

A car crash along Ku-Ring-Gai Chase Road, in Sydney’s far-north, earlier on Monday resulted in one of three southbound lanes being shut and more heavy traffic.

More to come…
