Taika Waititi reveals why his latest comedy series Reservation Dogs is ‘probably closer to my heart’ than his big budget productions

Taika Waititi has starred and directed Hollywood blockbusters for Marvel and DC Comics.

But the 45-year-old is turning his attention to a smaller scale TV comedy series – Reservation Dogs.

He told The Daily Telegraph on Saturday that while big budget productions have been enjoyable, the FX on Hulu show is ‘probably closer to my heart.’

The comedy centres on a group of four Indigenous teenagers in rural Oklahoma who steal and rob to raise money so they can get to California.

The New Zealand-born talent hopes to ‘twist those expectations’ after going through his own encounters with his early work about his own Maori community.

He recalled: ‘My early films would get negative feedback about them because they were like, “Well there’s not enough cultural specificity.”

Taika and the British pop star, 30, made their red carpet debut at the premiere of The Suicide Squad earlier this week.

The pair first sparked romance rumors back in April after she shared a photo of the Jojo Rabbit director throwing his arms around her neck, though his face was shielded by a baseball cap.

Both were in Australia at the time as Rita was filming The Voice and Taika was in the process of filming Thor: Love And Thunder.
