Tajiri the giraffe set to celebrate his first birthday

A year after April the giraffe gave birth to a baby boy, zookeepers are preparing to celebrated the calf’s one year anniversary. 

Animal Adventure Park in Harputsville, New York announced over the weekend that they will livestream a birthday bash at 7am PT on Sunday for Tajiri the giraffe. 

According to local broadcaster K5, the celebration will include a birthday cake, toys for Tajiri and other treats.

The calf has grown to be 10 feet tall and has nearly weaned himself from his mother since coming into the world.

Tajiri’s birth became a viral sensation in early 2017 when more than 1.2 million people tuned in to the zoo’s livestream to observer April give birth to her baby boy. 

April became a worldwide sensation in early March when YouTube briefly pulled the 24-hour livestream which had begun on February 10, for ‘nudity and sexual content’, leaving millions of viewers outraged.

The live footage was later restored on February 24 and drew more than 15 million views from across the world, with Facebook users chiming in with their comments.

One person wrote: ‘This is awesome! My seven-year-old has been on this journey of watching April and we are both so excited. Thanks Animal Adventure Park for this wonderful opportunity!’ 

Another said: ‘Just about to go out for my birthday lunch, just cancelled it, some things are more important, lol, and told no one to ring me up till then.’ 

At the time, a park employee described the birth as a ‘perfect delivery’ and with April giving birth to Tajiri on April 15th at 10am. 

Baby giraffes are reported to weigh around 150lbs and stand 6-feet-tall at birth, according to Animal Planet. 

April turned 16 this year and has been at Animal Adventure Park since August 2015, while Tajiri’s six-year-old father, Oliver, has been at the park since May 2015, according to K5.
