‘Of late, he has been receiving death threat upon death threat. Countless threats of the most unthinkable things,’ Mrs McGuire wrote on Instagram on Saturday.

‘Mental health is constantly being spoken about within the NRL and yet what I am witnessing is the absolute bashing of a man who can only take so much before that thick skin starts to soften.’

‘I am beyond sickened and disappointed and have witnessed more then enough moments of sadness for me to not make a stand and have a voice on this. It needs to change,’ she said.

Mrs McGuire has since said that her husband asked the football club for professional help in the wake of his online torment.

‘He’s been getting absolutely hammered, relentlessly — like hundreds every morning and they are just the most disgusting things,’ Mrs McGuire told the Townsville Bulletin.

‘He had someone a couple of days ago saying they hope he gets hit by a bus so his kids don’t have to grow up with Josh McGuire as their dad,’ she said.

‘He accessed support as of today. I think since the suspension that paired with the comments he’s at the point where he said I need to involve other people and talk to someone.’

McGuire’s mother, Karlene, also defended her son through a Facebook post, slamming those who labelled her son as a ‘grub’.

‘NRL has in their game , players who rape women, abuse women physically and verbally, glass their partners, take, sell and traffic illegal drugs, they even bestowed immortal status on individuals who openly admit to playing while using coke,’ she wrote on Facebook.

‘Yet he is the grub, the bad guy!’

McGuire entered an early guilty plea for a grade two contrary conduct charge following the incident which was his third offence this season.
