Shoppers are racing to supermarkets to bulk buy Tasty Toobs, with some even selling boxes of the iconic chips on eBay for seven times the retail price.

After years of fans petitioning for their favourite childhood snack to be revived, Smith’s has brought back the famous tubular tomato-flavoured chips.

Since launching in stores last week following a six-year hiatus, the retro snack, which costs $4.29 per bag, has been flying off shelves quicker than toilet paper, with one supermarket selling 700 packets in one day.

As customers stock up on Tasty Toobs, many looking to make a profit are now attempting to resell a box of eight bags for as much as $110, excluding postage.

There are more than 55 listings for Tasty Toobs on eBay, including boxes listed at a starting bid of $100, while prices for individual packs range from $19.95 to $30.

Some frustrated shoppers revealed they are struggling to get their hands on the sought-after chips, with one man saying: ‘So this is why I can never find any Toobs.

‘People are buying whole boxes so no one else can have Toobs… Pretty selfish if you ask me,’ he added.

While one mum said: ‘I drove around for one hour trying to find Tasty Toobs – nowhere to be seen.’ 

Meanwhile, many are stocking up on the treats, with one man saying: ‘I can’t believe all you Sydney people hoard toilet paper. Haha I hoard Toobs.’

While another suggested: ‘So curious have we evolved from cleaning toilet paper off the shelves to cleaning all the Toobs off the shelves?’

Shoppers are racing to stores to bulk buy boxes of Tasty Toobs after it relaunched last week

Despite the hysteria and excitement, some fans have expressed concerns over the ‘limited edition’ that’s printed on the packet.

However, Smith’s has launched a Keep-O-Meter to track sales performance and help keep the tangy, tomato-flavoured chips on shelf for good.

Vandita Pandey, chief marketing officer of PepsiCo ANZ, has reassured fans there is more than enough Tasty Toobs to go around.

‘We want to reassure our loyal fans that Tasty Toobs will be on the shelves for at least six months. We, like our fans want to work as a team to ensure that they stay for good this time,’ she said.

‘We were overwhelmed by the level of support from loyal fans and to finally see them in our retailers and consumers enjoying them again is awesome. 

‘We are always led by our consumers so we want them to help us keep Tasty Toobs as a permanent product.’ 

The tangy, tomato-flavoured Tasty Toobs were one of the most memorable snack icons of the 70s, and were brought back into production in 2007 after a six-year gap.

But the fan-favourite snacks were discontinued again by Smith’s in 2015 amid a lack of consumer demand.
