A NSW teacher has been charged with assault after footage of a classroom brawl surfaced online.

Police were called to Maitland Grossmann High School, in the Hunter region, on Tuesday afternoon following reports a pupil had been assaulted by a male teacher.

‘The teenage boy was assessed at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, however, was not physically injured,’ police said on Wednesday.

The 62-year-old male teacher was arrested at 9.30pm and later charged with common assault.

Opposition Leader Chris Minns was asked about the incident after a video posted on social media showed the classroom scuffle.

Police were called to Maitland Grossmann High School, north-west of Newcastle, about 2pm on Tuesday with the entire incident captured on video

‘I don’t know the circumstances,’ Mr Minns told Nine’s Today show on Wednesday.

‘Teachers have never been under so much pressure.

‘Discipline in school is important. Part of that is ensuring that when teachers make a call to principals they are backed up.

‘If there are examples of that in NSW education, we have to make sure the teachers are backed up.’

The teacher was given conditional bail to appear before Maitland Local Court on April 6.

The Department of Education is investigating the incident.

Disturbing footage of the alleged assault shows the teacher threw paper balls at the student before saying ‘come on mate’ and grabbing his collar.

The teacher then allegedly pulled the student over his desk but other students immediately intervened before the situation escalated any further.

A round of expletive arguments allegedly  broke out between the teacher and students with several kids yelling at the teacher to leave the student alone while he yelled at them to put their phones away.

One student then threw a desk at the teacher as the bell rang, causing several frightened pupils to run from the classroom.

The video ends with what allegedly appears to be the teacher striking the student who was grabbed by the collar after dragging him to the front of the classroom.
