Teacher dies after being hit by lorry cycling in London

Tributes have been paid to a teacher and former Metropolitan Police officer who died after she was hit by a lorry as she cycled home from work. 

Claudia Manera suffered fatal injuries when she collided with a lorry near her home in Ealing, west London, on October 12. 

The 51-year-old, who worked as a lecturer and fitness instructor and volunteered as a special constable, suffered serious leg injuries and died a week after the crash.

Scotland Yard said the lorry involved in the fatality stopped at the scene and the driver was assisting with police enquiries, but had not been arrested.

Ms Manera, originally from Turin, Italy, passed away at the Royal London Hospital on October 19 with her father Uno at her bedside. 

She had moved to the UK to complete a PhD in film and drama at Reading University, where she also taught Italian.

She also taught Drama and Theatre Studies at the Harlington School in west London.

She had run the London Marathon four times and volunteered as a special constable before joining as a full-time officer in Ealing.

Grief-stricken friends, family and students have since paid tribute to Ms Manera.

Andy Leung wrote on her Facebook page: ‘She was strong, smiling and full of optimism.’

Her former pupil Jamie Hill added: ‘She was my teacher for Drama and Theatre Studies, quite possibly one of the best I ever had.’

Sarah Massey added: ‘Claudia was a wonderful person and really inspirational instructor. Claudia was part of the ‘quit the gym’ family and she will be missed.’ 

Her father Ugo told the Evening Standard: ‘Friends and her students talk about her as an enthusiastic person, who tried to involve and motivate students with great energy, enthusiasm and passion, as if it were a mission.’
