Teacher sacked after telling pupil he would ‘end up stacking shelves’ is cleared of misconduct

Teacher, 32, who was sacked after telling pupil, nine, he would ‘end up stacking shelves’, made children face the wall and told boys they would ‘want girls touching them’ is cleared of misconduct

  • Steven Walker was fired from Queen Eleanor’s C of E school in Guildford, Surrey
  • In a game of ‘girl touch’, he told boys they would want girls touching them soon
  • Misconduct panel ruled this week that his inappropriate behaviour is ‘forgivable’

A fresh-faced primary school teacher who was sacked after telling a nine-year-old pupil he will end up stacking shelves and making comments about ‘touching girls’ has been cleared of misconduct.

Steven Walker, 32, reportedly warned a Year 5 boy who struggled with basic maths that his career would amount to menial labour such as stacking shelves or making packing boxes.

And the teacher, from Queen Eleanor’s C of E School in Guildford, Surrey, made his class play a game of ‘girl touch’.

During the game, he told the boys: ‘It won’t be long before you will want girls touching you all of the time,’ according to the Mirror.

But in a Teaching Regulation Agency hearing this week, a panel ruled that his behaviour – while inappropriate – was forgivable.

Mr Walker, from Sunderland, said that he had been stressed and was on ‘heavy-duty antibiotics’ after suffering from arthritis.

The teacher, who also made his pupils stand and face the wall if they misbehaved, joined the school in 2017, said that he was a ‘decent and honest bloke who’s lost almost two years of his life because he made a mistake’.

He hopes to return to teaching, but the school’s Good Shepherd Trust said that their allegations against – which warranted the sacking – had been proved.
