A Yemeni war victim whose penis and a testicle were cut off during an attack by extremists had his genitals rebuilt by surgeons in India.

The 45-year-old teacher was badly wounded during the country’s civil war, which is being fought between Iran-backed rebels and Saudi-led government forces.

He was left unable to urinate standing up, suffered ‘extreme trauma’, psychological damage, and was worried that his wife might leave him.

In order to go to the bathroom, he was forced to wear a burqa and use the women’s facilities.

But earlier this year he was brought to the city of Bengaluru, in southern India, where surgeons agreed to operate on him.

After a course of counselling, doctors performed the eight-hour operation in August, the Times of India reports.

Medics used muscle, skin and nerves taken from the man’s forearm to mould a new organ, while connecting it to a blood supply in his leg.

Doctors were also able to join the nerves from his arms to those in his crotch, meaning the new organ will be able to feel.

The man may even be able to reproduce using it, as doctors say ‘his reproductive abilities have not been fully hampered’.

‘He can lead a normal life,’ medics added.

Yemen, which is the poorest country in the Middle East, has been in the grips of a bitter civil war since 2015.

The conflict has crippled the country and led to a widespread famine, with the UN estimating that 13million Yemenis are on the brink of starvation.

Saudi ruler Mohammed bin Salman, who led Saudi forces into the conflict, has been heavily criticised for the level of civilian suffering caused.

Alongside the starvation, Saudi has been criticised for indiscriminately bombing civilian areas.
