A teammate of West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle sent a text message to a therapist saying ‘sexy’ as she was massaging him, a Sydney jury has been told.

The text was revealed in cross-examination after Dwayne Smith testified that Gayle did not expose his genitals to massage therapist Leanne Russell in the West Indies team dressing room during a Sydney training session at the 2015 World Cup.

‘I think that is something that you would remember if that happened and that didn’t happen,’ Smith said on Tuesday in the NSW Supreme Court.

Gayle is suing Fairfax Media contending that a series of articles falsely claimed he intentionally exposed his genitals to, and indecently propositioned, the massage therapist.

Smith told the four-person jury he was in the dressing room with Gayle when Ms Russell came in on the afternoon of February 11, 2015.

His teammate was not wearing a towel and did not pull it down to partially expose his penis to her saying ‘is this what you are looking for’, he said.

Under cross-examination by Matt Collins QC, for Fairfax, Smith denied suggestions that the exposure did happen and that he and Gayle had laughed about it.

He agreed he received a massage from Ms Russell on the previous day, February 10, and that he normally used his mobile phone during such sessions.

Dr Collins produced a text message saying ‘sexy’ which Smith accepted he had sent to Ms Russell.

But he denied giving false evidence about Gayle because he was seeking to protect his friend and because he himself had put Ms Russell in an uncomfortable position the day before by sending the text.

The hearing is continuing.
