Teen charged in ANU baseball bat attack due in court

A teenager charged after a rampage with a baseball bat in an Australian National University classroom was due to face court on Saturday morning.

The man, 18, was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm and intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm after the attack on Friday.

He was expected to appear at the ACT Magistrate’s Court on Saturday, the ABC reported.

 Witnesses informed police that a man stood up during a class and on Friday and approached the teacher wielding a baseball bat.

He then assaulted the three students who attempted to defend the lecturer, delivering non-life threatening injuries to four people.

Police rushed to the scene and arrested the man. They said soon afterwards there was no further threat to public safety.

The assault weapon was taken from the attacker during the incident, but was later returned to the police.

The victims were hospitalised, but the Canberra Times reported that two were discharged from the emergency department on Friday afternoon.

Two of the assault victims remain in hospital, and are receiving ongoing care for ‘minor injuries’.
