Bethany Fisher, pictured, died outside her mother’s home in the horror crash

A heartbroken mother rushed outside after being woken by a car crash only to find that her teenage daughter was the victim of a new driver who lost control of his car while ‘showing off’.

Bethany Fisher was celebrating her birthday when she was killed by Jordan O’Donnell who ignored her pleas to slow down then fled and left her to die.

He was ‘on the face of it showing off’ behind the wheel of a high-powered saloon after offering a lift to the 19-year-old and her best friend Meg McBurnie.

As he reached estimated speeds of around 60mph in residential streets of Bedlington, Northumberland, the girls in the back seat asked him to stop it.

But as the 20-year-old – who had only passed his test weeks earlier – carried out a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre on a bend, he lost control, smashing into parked cars, careering out of control and hitting a fence and wall.

The noise of the crash woke Bethany’s mum, Isabel Easson, and she went out into the street on Victoria Terrace to seek to help – only to be confronted with the horrific scene of her daughter fatally injured and Meg lying on the ground screaming in agony.

Despite the devastation he had caused, O’Donnell callously fled to his home nearby and calmly phoned police, lying that his turbo-charged Ford Mondeo ST had been stolen during a burglary at his home and requesting police attend.

O’Donnell, who admitted causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, causing death by driving while uninsured, attempting to pervert the course of justice and failing to stop after an accident, has been locked up for six years at Newcastle Crown Court.

Judge Paul Sloan QC told O’Donnell, who sobbed throughout the hearing on a video-link from custody: ‘Miss McBurnie was telling you to stop it, Miss Fisher was telling you to slow down but you continued to drive as before, on the face of it showing off.

‘You were clearly driving at a grossly excessive speed.’

The judge added: ‘No sentence I’m permitted in law to pass could ever begin to ease the pain they will always suffer as a result of your actions.

‘You will forever have to live with the knowledge that as a result of your dangerous driving that night, you killed Bethany Fisher.’

The court heard Bethany had turned 19 on August 17 and the following night went out celebrating with friends.

O’Donnell was out with his pals and had earlier bought 20 bottles of Stella Artois.

They later went to Astons Late Bar, on Front Street, Bedlington, where Bethany and Meg also were.

Meg had known O’Donnell since they were 15 and he offered to take her and Bethany to a house the girls were heading to.

Bethany and Meg were in the back of the car – along with a male – and there was another man in the front passenger seat.

Prosecutor Mark Giuliani said: ‘The defendant was driving dangerously, sliding from side to side.

‘Meg McBurnie said it was ‘completely reckless’, the car was jerking from left to right and he was very fast and she even hit her head.

‘She said ‘I was telling him to stop it and Beth told him to slow down’.’

Another motorist saw the Mondeo speed up behind her so she slowed down to let it past and she estimated it was doing at least 60mph as he overtook, on the wrong side of the carriageway, where the road bends.

Neighbours came out after hearing a crash at around 1.45am on August 19, including Bethany’s mum, who saw Meg lying on the ground screaming before noticing her daughter fatally injured.

Mr Giuliani said: ‘Miss Fisher suffered serious injuries in the back of the car. She was unconscious, with her life rapidly slipping away.

‘This collision happened almost outside her front door. Her mum, as many other neighbours did, on hearing the noise came out. Her mother witnessed her daughter dying. Miss Easson collapsed in the road, screaming and another resident came to help her.’

At 2.05am O’Donnell dialled 999 to falsely claim his home, just 50 metres from the scene of the crash, had been burgled and his car stolen. The court heard he was sounded ‘calm and collected and showed no distress whatsoever’.

When later arrested and told Bethany had died, O’Donnell replied: ‘You’re joking aren’t you.’

Meg, 19, was left with five fractures to her pelvis, still needs the use of a wheelchair and crutches and is expected to suffer back pain for the rest of her life.

O’Donnell, of Waverley Court, Bedlington, will be banned from driving for four years following his release.
