Teenage boy miraculously maintains his eyesight after an iPhone battery explodes in his face – leaving him with scars on his chest

  • Jay Watson, 15, was rushed to hospital on Sunday evening after the incident

A 15-year-old boy is lucky to have his sight after a phone battery exploded in his face, leaving him with burns on his chest.

Jay Watson, from Brisbane, was tinkering with his iPhone 6 on Sunday night when the battery ignited.

As well as singeing the boys hair, the explosion sprayed battery acid on to his chest.

‘I wanted to see what was inside,’ Jay told 7News.

‘I just bent it and once I did it just exploded… It was a bang and then a huge flame of fire.’

He was rushed to Royal Brisbane and Woman’s Hospital after his mother heard his screams and phoned an ambulance.

He was released a short time later.

Doctors said he was lucky the acid did not land anywhere else.

‘He could have lost his eyesight if the splats of acid hit his eyes as opposed to his chest,’ the boy’s mother Kari Lashbrook told 9News.

Phone manufacturers and authorities have warned against tampering with lithium ion batteries due to the volatile nature of their components.

In 2016, Samsung halted production of their Note 7 phones due to a battery defect, which caused many phones to overheat and ignite – even without tampering.

‘I probably should have Googled it first,’ Jay says, admitting he has learned a valuable lesson from the experience.
