Teenage pupil dies after being hit by train at Chertsey station

A teenage secondary school pupil has died after being hit by a train at a Surrey station.

The Year 9 student, aged 14, was killed by a train at Chertsey station around 4pm yesterday.

Paramedics and police were called to the scene but the child was pronounced dead at the trackside.

Salesian School in Chertsey has confirmed the pupil attended there and said pupils and staff are in shock. 

One mother claimed the platform was ‘full of school children’ at the time.

In a statement this evening the British Transport Police said: ‘Officers were called to Chertsey station at 4pm yesterday (July 15) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

‘Paramedics also attended but sadly a 14-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

‘The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.’

This afternoon, representatives of the Samaritans were at the station, where pupils were accompanied by teachers. 

The school’s headteacher James Kibble said yesterday evening: ‘We were devastated to find out that, following an incident at Chertsey station, one of our Year 9 students died this afternoon. 

‘This is an incredibly difficult situation for everyone, but knowing the faith, compassion and strength of our school community, I am confident that we will work together to support one another. 

‘This will start from first thing tomorrow, and will be holding a series of assemblies to talk to the students about what has happened and how we can collectively come to terms with this tragedy.

‘We would ask that our community joins together to remember the student and their family in their prayers at this incredibly sad time.’

The school has cancelled its planned sports day today as pupils grieve for their friend.  

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: ‘Officers were called to Chertsey station at 4pm today following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

‘Paramedics also attended and sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.’ 

A South Western Railway spokesman said last night: ‘A person has been struck by a train between Virginia Water and Weybridge. Our response teams are working with the emergency services to assist with the incident. 

‘In order to allow emergency services access to the railway all power to the track will need to be switched off in the affected area.

‘Trains between these stations will not be able to run until further notice.’ 

British Transport Police say the incident is not being treated as suspicious

There was a second tragedy tonight in the same area as the 14-year-old schoolboy was killed under the wheels of a train.

The same paramedics who attending Chertsey station on Monday afternoon were called to the next station along the line tonight where a person had thrown themselves under another train.

Despite rushing to the scene on platform four at Woking rail station in Surrey, just a could of miles from Chertsey, there was nothing the medics could do for the victim who was certified dead on the tracks.

It was not known tonight whether there was any connection between the two deaths. 

British Transport Police were called to deal with the death tonight but it was not believed to have been suspicious.

Trains were halted on the lines as a full scale investigation was launched on behalf of the Surrey coroner. An inquest will be opened and adjourned at a later date.

It was unclear whether the victim was a man or woman or where they had come from. 

A post mortem examination will be held to ascertain the exact cause of death.
