Teenager, 18, ‘stabbed to death by a gang of thugs’ as he walked home from evening prayers at mosque

A teenager was stabbed to death as he walked home from evening prayers at mosque in Dublin. 

Azzam Raguragui, 18, was ‘set on by a gang of thugs’ while walking through Finsbury Park, Dundrum, at around 8.10pm last night.

He was rushed to St James’s Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after.

Tributes have flooded in for Azzam, known affectionately to friends as Azzi, as his loved ones come to terms with their loss. 

According to the Irish Mirror, a spokesman for the Irish Sufi Foundation said: ‘Just received the devastating and heartbreaking news that our young brother Azzam was set on by a gang of thugs and stabbed to death in a Dundrum park last night.’

A murder investigation has been opened by the Irish Garda Police. 

According to the Irish Times, a male teenager has presented himself to police officers in relation to the case and is helping with ongoing inquiries. 

Detectives do not believe the attack was racially motivated.

A postmortem is currently being carried out by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Linda Mulligan.

One of Azzam’s friends posted a tribute on Facebook to say: ‘We all remember Azzam’s beautiful character and smile, we were also comforted with the fact that his Father and Mother were pleased with him and in that alone there is a glad tiding.’ 

Special prayers in his memory are being held tonight at the Sufi Mosque on Talbot Street in Dublin.
