Television and radio legend dies aged 85 – as friends and family share heartfelt tributes to the star

Beloved television and radio legend Roger Cardwell has died at the age of 85.

The presenter, actor, reporter and musician was born in 1934 in Adelaide, South Australia.

He passed away on Saturday morning surrounded by family and friends after a fierce battle with blood cancer and lung cancer.

Throughout the 1960s he was the host of the national TV show Country and Western Hour.  

Cardwell is known for his roles in Robbery Under Arms (1985), The Survivor (1981) and Siam Sunset (1999).

During filming, the former journalist used to read the news for 5AD-FM and 5DN from 1985 to 1998. 

In 1996, he was initiated into the Australian Country Music Hall of Fame for his country music. 

His ex-wife and former Channel 9 weather presenter, Sue Cardwell,  wrote a heartfelt tribute to Cardwell on Facebook. 

‘We were all blessed to be here in time to say goodbye and to laugh and cry together as we shared our memories as a family,’ she wrote.

‘We sang and hummed together in harmony in his final hours.’

His son, Simon also took to Facebook and farewelled his beloved father’s memory.  

‘This morning my father passed. He was surrounded by his children,’ he wrote.

‘It was a privilege to be with him when he left. He will be missed and always be loved.’

Mr Cardwell moved into Resthaven Malvern nursing home five years ago due to poor health. 

His colleague and friend Greg Clark remembered him as a ‘bloody trooper’.

‘The last commercial I did with him was in 2016 before his health really deteriorated — he was a bloody trooper,’ he told The Advertiser.
