A private entrance leads to a drawing room, which is covered in original artwork and tapestries, while the dining room has enough space for 24 guests.

Clytha Castle is a Gothic retreat in South Wales that overlooks the picturesque Usk Valley.

It dates back to 1790 when it was built by William Jones as a personal memorial to his deceased wife. It was designed by architect John Davenport.

In 1948, the last resident, a gamekeeper, left the castle empty but some 30 years later, it was rescued by the Landmark Trust, which restored it to its former glory.

Now a holiday rental, Clytha Castle has three bedrooms and can sleep up to six people. A four-night stay starts from £682.

Kingswear Castle, at the mouth of the Dart Estuary, was completed in 1502 and was built to defend Dartmouth harbour – large guns were mounted inside on the ground floor.

But just 50 years later, the castle became redundant. This was partly due to the new guns at Dartmouth Castle – on the opposite side of the estuary – being able to cover the whole river and partly because Kingswear Castle’s iron weapons, exposed to fierce weather, rusted too easily.

In 1987 the castle was bought by the Landmark Trust and turned into a holiday let. It boasts two bedrooms that can sleep up to four people, while from the roof there are sweeping views across Dartmouth and the rocky coast.

The castle can be rented for four nights from £658 through the Landmark Trust.
