Terminally ill boy, seven, fulfils dream of being a prince for the day as he ‘marries’ his mother

A seven-year-old boy has fulfilled his dream of becoming a prince for the day after tying the knot with his mother in a fairytale ceremony.

Logan Mountcastle walked down the aisle to ‘marry’ his mum, Joelean during a pretend wedding at Gainsborough Liberal Club, Lincolnshire surrounded by family and friends.

The youngster has just years left to live after being diagnosed with a genetic disorder and had always dreamed of getting hitched before becoming ill.

So in a bid to make Logan’s wish come true, his mother organised a Beauty and the Beast themed wedding to fulfil her little boy’s dreams.

The emotional ceremony, which saw identical bracelets blessed and handed out to the family, brought many guests to tears and Joelean admits it was a mixed experience.

She said: ‘It has been really emotional, I am overwhelmed. I can’t get over how many people have come today.

‘Family and friends have contributed to make this party such a good event.

‘We’ve got memories that we will always cherish.

‘He’s always said that he wanted to marry mummy, which I thought was a bit bizarre, but he is never going to get the chance when he is older and he has certainly enjoyed himself.

‘And you can tell how much he has enjoyed it. He is overwhelmed.

‘All the children have been excited and counting how many sleeps there were until today.

‘When he watches Beauty and the Beast he was always laughing – now he’s got what he wants and any mum would want that.

‘I was up here until 1am putting up balloons and decorations.

‘Yesterday he was a bit poorly and I wondered how we were going to get on. It’s just been amazing.’

Joelean booked a methodist minister for the event and instead of reading a vow, made a promise to him that she will always be there to keep him safe.

Logan was like any other child until he fell over last summer.

Joelean says no tests were taken and medics discharged Logan, saying he was a normal, little boy.

But the next day at home, she noticed he was walking to one side and grew increasingly concerned when he said his brain was hurting.

Doctors still maintained there was nothing, wrong but an MRI scan taken in December 2017 showed he had Leukodystrophy.

The incurable genetic disorder affects the brain and nervous system’s ability to function, with doctors saying there was nothing they could do to help.

On May 23, tests showed it was Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD) meaning the St George’s student could have anything from three to 15 years to live.

Joelean’s mother Lucy Bognar said: ‘It’s been very emotional but very special.

‘This time last year he was just a normal little boy playing in my garden.

‘We’ve made loads of memories and hopefully we’ll keep them forever.

‘It’s heartbreaking, but it’s lovely to see him so happy – he’s a happy today.

‘It’s nice to see the family has pulled together for this happy occasion.’

Chairman of the Pride of the Isle, a charity which makes memories for poorly children and helped organise the event, Leesa Sharpe said: ‘Today has been magical.’As soon as we found out we got straight onto it.

‘Joelean said he liked Beauty and the Beast, so we helped organised to bring them to the event.’

Methodist minister Louise Carr said: ‘Obviously it is not a wedding really, it’s a family blessing and with promises to look after each other.

She added: ‘It was privilege to be involved.’
