  • He was branded an ‘idiot’, after he uploaded the video, gaining 46,000 views

A man has risked his own life by using a gas cylinder as a flamethrower to light his barbecue.

Terrifying footage shows Aaron Hinds from Launceston, Tasmania, holding the tank with his hands as a huge plume of burning gas flies out.

Experts responded with disbelief, saying that the reckless act could have cost Mr Hinds his life.

Mr Hinds was branded an ‘idiot’ on Facebook after uploading the footage, but simply replied: ‘I know science and checked relief valve.’

The footage was captioned ‘Can’t spell awesome with Me!’ – a reference to American pop singer Taylor Swift’s new song ‘Me!’.

Veteran firefighter John Farrer told A Current Affair the reckless behaviour was ‘catastrophic’.

‘I’ve seen too many incidents that could be avoided and that’s purely with common sense,’ Mr Farrer, Fire and Safety Australia training supervisor said.

Mr Hinds (pictured) was branded an ‘idiot’ in one comment but simply replied: ‘I know science and checked relief valve.’

Director of the Victorian Adult Burns Service at The Alfred hospital in Melbourne, Dr Heather Cleland, warned the behaviour could lead to a ‘life-ending injury’.

The viral footage comes after a western Sydney man was filmed pouring an entire bucket of fire starters over an already lit barbecue.

The barbecue set exploded into an enormous blaze with clouds of black smoke, and knocked the man to the ground.

The accident left the man with severe burns.
