Dramatic footage has captured the horrifying moment customers fled for their lives after the roof collapsed at Bangkok’s biggest shopping mall.

Torrential rain during a wild thunderstorm caused the ceiling to fall in at Central Plaza WestGate in Nonthaburi’s Bang Yai district on Wednesday night.

Terrifying footage shows sections of the ceiling come crashing to the ground floor.

The screams of shocked shoppers can be heard as they fled to escape the carnage and torrential deluge pouring from above.

‘If it landed on a person they could have been killed,’ a shopper who filmed the footage told Yahoo.

‘There was nobody directly underneath because people had moved away from the water pouring from the ceiling.

‘The thunderstorm was very, very strong and the rain was powerful, but the building should be strong enough to withstand that.’

Centre management said no one was injured and that damaged areas were cordoned off while overnight repairs were completed, The Bangkok Post reported.

The mall was reopened for business as normal on Thursday morning, despite damage to several shops.

Engineers are examining the building structure to find the cause of the roof collapse to ensure similar incidents don’t reoccur in the future.

Opened in 2015, the mall is described on its website as the ‘ultimate super regional mall in south-east Asia.’ and is the biggest shopping centre in Thailand.

The severe electrical storm caused flash flooding in the Thai capital on Wednesday night.
