Musk followed up the tweet with a second tweet, referring to Yang’s April revelation that he is an ex-goth who great up listening to The Smiths, The Cure, Joy Division and other bands

In April, Yang revealed that he is an ‘ex-goth,’ who grew up listening to The Smiths, The Cure, Siouxie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode and Joy Division, among others, and has appropriately moody yearbook photos to shore up the claim.

The SpaceX CEO’s tweets were tied back to Yang’s tweet that morning in which he had written: ‘I don’t expect people to agree with me on everything- that would be odd My main hope is that people trust that I’m trying to solve problems and I’m open to different approaches – particularly if the data drives in a particular direction. Changing one’s mind is not a bad thing.’

Yang, an entrepreneur and former tech executive, has been campaigning around the idea of a $1,000 monthly basic income for those 18 and over – the Freedom Dividend – as a way of helping to off-set job losses due to increasing automation.

After tweeting that he supported Yang, a tweeter asked Musk, who has claimed to be a registered independent, what his thoughts about a universal basic income were.

‘Obviously needed,’ replied Musk, whose has a net worth estimated at $19.9billion.

On Thursday, it was revealed that Yang has become the ninth Democrat to qualify for the next presidential primary debates, which will be held in September.
