Tesla’s Model S Plaid is the first production car to complete a quarter mile in under nine seconds.
The vehicle, driven by American race car driver Christine Dodworth, reached 125.10 miles per hour during the trip, finishing the run at the Maryland International Raceway in 8.944 seconds.
The Model S was a stock, meaning it came directly from the factory without any modifications, and only had the passenger seat removed to reduce weight.
The record also places the Tesla as the second-fastest all-electric vehicle in the world, following the $2 million 2021 Rimac Nevera, which used four electric motors to run an 8.6- and 8.7-quarter mile earlier this year.

The news was shared with the release of a video, showing Dodworth behind the wheel of a black Model S Plaid.
The vehicle ignites its engines and takes off down a straight track, as first reported on by Electreck.
‘For Tesla in entire world in the 8s, Christine Dodworth,’ George Dodworth, Christine’s husband, can be heard saying excitingly behind the starting line.
Tesla found Elon Musk has said the Model S Plaid is capable of completing a quarter mile in just 9.23 seconds, but Dodworth’s record shows it can make the run in less time.

George shared the video to his Instagram of the vehicle’s achievement, with a post that reads: ‘We’ve been ready to make the attempt for a few months but between work and weather it was not possible. Elon! Do we have your attention yet?’
Musk, along with Tesla’s lead designer, Franz von Holzhausen, introduced the near $130,000 car earlier in June, proudly sharing it goes zero to 60 in under two seconds.
And shipping began on June 11, which is a new iteration of the nine-year-old luxury sedan.
According to the company’s website, the tri-motor Model S Plaid has a 390-mile range, a top speed of 200mph and 1,020 horsepower.

With a dual motor configuration, it can go 412 miles on a single charge and Musk said that it is capable of traveling 187 miles on just a 15-minute charge.
Plaid is a reference to Musk’s love of the movie ‘Spaceballs,’ updating the Model S with ‘ludicrous speed’ in the past, a nod to the 1987 Mel Brooks comedy.
Musk announced another speed record made by a Model S Plaid in September.
The car completed a full lap on Germany’s 13-mile-long Nürburgring Nordschleife track in seven minutes and 35.579 seconds.
The time surpasses the previous best of seven minutes and 42 seconds that was recorded by a Porsche Taycan Turbo in 2019.
