Tesla sales tumbled in the second quarter amid a backlash over founder Elon Musk’s politics.

The electric vehicle (EV) maker made 382,122 vehicles in the three months to the end of June, a 13.5 per cent drop from 443,956 a year earlier. It was the second quarterly fall in sales in a row and puts it on track for an overall decline for the year.

Demand has plunged due to Musk’s once-close ties to Donald Trump and his support for right-wing parties across Europe.

Musk quit as the White House’s efficiency czar in May and the pair have since been engaged in a bitter row over the US President’s tax-cutting bill.

An ageing car line-up and tougher competition from cheaper Chinese firms such as BYD, the world’s biggest EV maker, have also dented sales.

Tesla shares rose 4.8 per cent yesterday as the decline in sales was less than some analysts feared. The stock has lost 22 per cent of its value in 2025.
