Texas cop fights for job after latest ‘vile’ prank, smearing brown substance in women’s bathroom

A former Texas police officer is fighting to get his job back a second time after he’s been fired twice for ‘vile’ pranks, this time defecating in a women’s toilet, not flushing and smearing a brown substance on the seat.

Matthew Luckhurst, who was a bike patrol officer with the San Antonio Police Department, was originally terminated in October 2016 for giving a homeless person a feces sandwich, but then won his job back on a technicality.

An arbitrator put Luckhurst back on the force citing a rule that says an officer cannot be punished for conduct that occurred more than 180 days prior to the discipline, but did not excuse the act.

Luckhurst now is fired again after the department learned of another prank where he defecated in a woman’s restroom, did not flush and smeared a brown substance on the seat

Luckhurst, however, was fired again after the department learned of another prank that happened the same year. The officer was found to have defecated in the women’s restroom, not flushed and smeared a brown substance on the seat.

During his second bid to get his job back this week, Luckhurst took full responsibility for the prank and said, ‘in hindsight, it was immature,’ reports KSAT.

The former officer, responding to questioning from the city’s attorney on Tuesday, called the incident ‘a joke,’ and insisted that a second officer who was implicated for similar behavior actually did not participate in the prank.

Luckhurst also denied he smeared the brown substance on the seat, which he said was a coffee product. Instead, he claimed he put small balls of the product on the seat and suspects they may have melted.

A day earlier at the start of the arbitration hearing, the city’s attorney charged that Luckhurst harassed, intimidated and degraded female officers with the prank.

San Antonio Police Officer Jessica Medrano testified she was nauseated upon discovering the unflushed feces, and it was noted that she was eight-and-a-half months pregnant at the time.

‘I had a lot of nausea during my pregnancy. As soon as I smelt it I wanted to vomit. I was gagging,’ said Medrano, KSAT reports.

She said she was left ‘mad and disgusted’ and declared she would never work with Luckhurst again.

‘It’s led to mistrust between the citizens of San Antonio and our department, that our officers have had to answer for his actions,’ the officer said.’

Police Chief William McManus was called as a witness Wednesday and said he doesn’t think Luckhurst deserves to come back to the police department.

The chief testified that he stands behind his decision to fire Luckhurst for playing a ‘prank’ involving excrement, calling the behavior ‘vile and disgusting.’

Attorney Ben Sifuentes, who is representing Luckhurst, questioned the chief about other bike patrol statements that suggested what happened was widely recognized in the department as ‘just a joke.’

The lawyer also brought up other incidents of harassment where he said the discipline was not termination.

One example was a 2016 incident involving an officer who was found to have inappropriately touched a 21-year-old female ‘police explorer’ during a ‘ride-along.’

The officer received was given a 10-day suspension under McManus.

Sifuentes also brought up an incident where he said an San Antonio police captain had a penis engraved on a gun for another male officer.

He claimed that despite complaints from women on the force, the captain was not disciplined.

The arbitration is expected to conclude on Thursday.
