Texas school basketball player sucker punches opponent

A shocking video has revealed the moment a high school basketball player elbowed an opponent in the head, sending her crashing to the floor in agony.

Distressing footage from a game in San Antonio, Texas, in November shows the Senior McKenzie Dill from Kerrville Tivy hit sophomore Destiny Hilliary from behind, knocking to the ground on the court.

Hilliary is then seen trying to get to her feet before stumbling around and collapsing in a heap with a nasty concussion.

Despite the violent assault, Dill has only been suspended for two games and placed on probation.

Her cousin and teammate, Lani Sanford, ran to her aid according to ABC12.

Hilliary’s mother Lupita was shocked the referee didn’t call foul on the play.

‘My heart dropped. It was like (my heart) fell out of my body. I was so concerned,’ she said.

Hilliary was immediately taken to Texas MedClinic where doctors diagnosed her with a concussion. The next day she was also diagnosed with a concussion by a sports medicine doctor.

Apparently the hit had been so bad, and it’s the second concussion she’s received, that the doctor told Hilliary she would have to consider no longer playing sports.

Hilliary said the only thing she remembers is being hit and waking up with lots of people around her.

‘She’s been playing since she was 4. She has aspirations to play in college,’ her mother said.

According to Lupita Jacob Alegria, the South San girls’ basketball coach, showed the video to Christy Dill, the coach at Kerrville Tivy but apparently Dill disregarded the video.

It turns out McKenzie, who was the one who shoved Hilliary, is the Kerrville Tivy coach’s daughter.

Speaking about the video Alegria said ‘I’ve seen the video 100 times, and I believe the Tivy player headhunted our player. I believe she went full speed into our player.’

‘From our end, we believe there should be consequences for that action,’ he said, reported My San Antonio News.

Lupita said she plans on pursuing assault charges. She filed a report with the San Antonio Police Department. ‘I went in there to file charges for assault,’ Hilliary said.

‘Just because they’re in a game, people are trying to say “it happens in sports.” Even the doctor said basketball isn’t a contact sport,’ she continued.

Jocelyn Durand, South San ISD communications officer, said she spoke to the athletic director and they decided to submit the video to the University Interscholastic League for review.

Charles Breithaupt, UIL executive director, responded saying ‘We want to bring it to everyone’s attention that we can’t tolerate these incidents,’ according to Star-Telegram.

Breithaupt said the UIL received more than 1,000 incidents or reports last year where a coach, a player, or a fan acted inappropriately during a game.
