- Australian mother Rachael has revealed her favourite laundry detergent trick
- She has been mixing soap flakes, bicarb soda and an essence for three years
- Two tablespoons of vinegar is also used as a fabric softener during the wash
- The powder lasts for a number of months doing ‘three to four loads a week’
Laundry detergent can cost anywhere from $15 to $20 a kilo at the supermarket, and some don’t even promise that crispy freshness you expect from your wash.
But one Aussie mother is foregoing the expensive varieties and instead opting for a homemade version.
‘I had a request the other day for my washing powder recipe which lasts me months on end doing 3-4 loads a week,’ she explained on Facebook.

Rachael uses a 700g box of soap flakes (the Aldi brand which is $3 a packet), a cup of bicarbonate soda or baking soda and an essence.
‘Use a few drops of your choice of essence. I love using Tea Tree Oil or Eucalyptus but I have used Rose and Sandalwood with great results,’ she explained.
‘Combine the soap flakes and bicarbonate until mixed with no lumps then while mixing add drop by drop of oil (too much will make it sticky so less is actually more).

‘Then I have a big container and a small one so I’m not opening and letting the air get to the whole batch seeing as it lasts so long.
‘My wash consists of one teaspoon of my powder and two tablespoons of vinegar (just household cleaning) as my fabric softener.’
The vinegar acts as a softener because it maintains ‘the perfect chemical reaction with any washing powder’ and gives your clothes that fresh finish.
‘I’ve used this washing powder for three years now and absolutely love it.’
