The Batman director shares first look at Robert Pattinson suited up as the new Caped Crusader

Fans got their first look at Robert Pattinson as Batman on Thursday.

Director Matt Reeves shared a camera test of the actor in the new Batman suit via Vimeo.

The 56-second clip slowly brings the Bat motif on the front of the suit into focus before panning up to show Pattinson in profile as he flexes his armored shoulders.

The footage, set to a dramatic score by composer Michael Giacchino and bathed in red light, ends with Pattinson turning towards the camera revealing the mask that covers his eyes and nose.

The former star of The Twilight Saga was officially cast as the Caped Crusader last May.

It came after Reeves, whose credits include 2008’s Cloverfield as well as 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, took over the project at Warner Bros. from Ben Affleck.

Affleck stepped down as both director and star after two outings as the Dark Knight in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017’s Justice League.

Filming on The Batman began in London in January.

Pattinson had actively pursued the role in The Batman, telling Variety last September: ‘I’d had Batman in my mind for a while. It’s such an absurd thing to say. I sort of had an idea to do it, and I’d been prodding Matt. He didn’t accept any prods. I kept asking to meet him.’

The actor first got to try on the Batman suit during the final stages of the audition process.

He told Variety: ‘You do feel very powerful immediately.’

He went on to describe how the suit ‘is incredibly difficult to get into, so the ritual of getting into it is pretty humiliating.’

‘You’ve got five people trying to shove you into something. Once you’ve got it on, it’s like, ‘Yeah, I feel strong, I feel tough, even though I had to have someone squeezing my butt cheeks into the legs.”

The Batman is set to open in theaters on June 25, 2021, and also stars Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as Riddler, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, John Turturro as crime boss Carmine Falcone, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred and Peter Sarsgaard as a Gotham City DA.

Pattinson is just the latest in a string of famous actors who have donned the cape.

The comic book character has been brought to life on the big screen by Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck.

Each incarnation has had his own version of the suit although it has always followed the basics of the original design.

The Bat-Suit started out as a fabric bodysuit and has become an armored layer of protection, albeit still molded to the body.

The suit is paired with a cowl that has pointed antenna ears and slits for the eyes, serving as a disguise for Bruce Wayne as well as making him more imposing.

There’s also a cape with scalloped edges to resemble the wings of a bat, gloves, boots and a utility belt.
