The best exercises for sculpting your legs

WHAT TO DO

This exercise is what I like to call the riverboat toe-dipper, says celebrity personal trainer Nadya Fairweather (u-shape.co.uk). It works the whole leg.

I like to use a bottom stair so I can hold the banister for support. Stand sideways on the stair with weight on your right leg. Bend both and dip your left off the stair, kicking back behind you and into the ‘water’ (pictured). Straighten standing leg while bringing left leg forward until your knee is bent in front of you.

Kick back with your left leg again, while bending right leg as before. Repeat 15 times, then swap legs.

The first step to easing cankles is to avoid adding salt to your diet, says nutritionist Shona Wilkinson (shonawilkinson.com).

When you eat too much sodium, your body retains more water, which can make ankles swell. Once you cut down on sodium, you should see a difference in a few days.

Processed foods tend to be high in salt, so you should avoid these, too. Thanks to a high potassium content, apple cider vinegar works brilliantly to balance sodium in the body. Tinned sardines contain omega-3 essential fatty acids, which are converted by the body into anti-inflammatory chemicals to help reduce inflammation in ankles.
