The Black Phone trailer teases a terrifying tale of child abductions with a supernatural twist

Nearly a decade after starring in the horror-thriller Sinister, Ethan Hawke is reuniting with co-writer/director Scott Derrickson in the new trailer for The Black Phone.

Hawke plays a terrifying character known only as The Grabber, who is responsible for a spate of child abductions in a tight-knit community.

Derrickson collaborated with his longtime writing partner C. Robert Cargill on the screenplay, which was adapted from Joe Hill’s (the son of Stephen King) short story of the same name.

The trailer begins with a class getting out of session, as young Finney Blake (Mason Thames) walks home from school with his sister Gwen (Madeline McGraw).

She tells him that she’s staying the night at Susie’s as Finney spots a flyer for another missing kid.

Gwen says the papers call him, ‘The Grabber,’ as Finney says, ‘I wish you wouldn’t call him that.’

She asks her brother if he really believes the story that The Grabber can somehow hear kids say The Grabber and that’s how he picks his victims.

Finney is then seen walking alone, when a black van with Abracadabra Entertainment & Supplies logo painted on it, when Hawke’s mysterious character stumbles into frame, dropping two bags of groceries.

The man laughs about his broken groceries and asks Finney to hand him his hat, saying he is, ‘a part-time magician.’

Finney walks closer to the van and asks, ‘are those black balloons in there,’ as The Grabber puts on his hat and says, ‘Would you like to see a magic trick?’

A pair of black balloons are seen caught in a tree, as we see a school assembly where it’s announced that Finney is missing.

While Gwen goes out on her bike looking for her brother, we see Finney in a dark basement room with only a mattress and an old black rotary phone.

He picks up the phone and tries to get a ring tone as The Grabber tells him, ‘It doesn’t work, as he’s seen wearing a devil-ish mask.

Finney says he’ll scream and scratch his face, as The Grabber shows off his elaborate face mask and says, ‘This face?’… but it was all just a dream Gwen had… or was it?

She goes to tell her father (Jeremy Davies) that she had a dream as she tells cops about what she saw, as it’s revealed they never released details that Finney was taken by a man with black balloons.

Finney is laying on his mattress when suddenly the black phone starts to ring, and when he picks it up, a voice tells him not to hang up.

Finney asks who the person is, as we see the spirit of one of the abducted kids whose faces adorn those flyers Finney was previously looking at.

‘You know all our names. You’re getting out of here,’ the voices tell him, as Finney starts to follow their instructions.

Every voice he hears from The Black Phone is a previous victim, one of whom tells Finney the combination of the storm door lock.

One of the voices instructs Finney to use the phone receiver as a weapon against The Grabber as the trailer winds down with one of the victims telling Finney that today is the day he stands up for himself.

The trailer ends with Finney walking past a sleeping Grabber and quietly entering the combination before the Grabber opens his eyes.

The film, which also stars James Ransone, E. Roger Mitchell and Kellan Rhude, hits theaters nationwide on February 4.
