The big turn offs

  • An unruly pathway to the front door
  • Overcrowded space
  • Bad lighting
  • Unpleasant ambiance
  • Tired-looking furniture
  • Outdated bathrooms

Front Facade

‘First impressions always count, so when people arrive at your home, be sure to give them something impressive that their eye is drawn to,’ the interior designer duo said.

‘This could be a feature front door painted in a contrasting colour, or a porch with fresh decking and a sitting area.

‘Potted plants either side of your entry way are a great way to greet guests to your home by simply adding a touch of green.’

Kitchen

‘For many Australians, the kitchen is the hub of the home,’ the pair explained.

‘A fresh kitchen that people can see themselves cooking and entertaining in can be a huge selling point.

‘Some tips to update an existing kitchen could be to freshen up cabinetry with a coat of paint, update handles and new tiled splashback.

‘Look for ways to increase the functional working area of the kitchen – such as purchasing a butcher’s block.’

Kyal and Kara’s styling tips that will instantly add value to your home

Declutter: The best place to start is with a big cull of each room. You want guests and/or potential buyers to be able to imagine themselves living in your home. The best way to do this, is to engage them emotionally. A clean, uncluttered space with neat furniture and relaxed styling will help.

A fresh coat of paint

Update window coverings: Especially at the front of the home (ie windows that are visible from the street scape).

Kitchen update: Whether a full renovation is in the budget or a cosmetic makeover, kitchens are such an important part of any home. Simple ideas could be: re-tiling the splashback, painting cabinetry and replacing handles.

Indoor plants: lndoor plants are a great way of freshening up a space and bringing the outdoors in – they can instantly make a room feel vibrant.

Lighting: Some scented candles and playing music is also a great tip for creating an ambiance as people inspect your home.

Get second hand materials: There are over 600,000 listings within the Home and Garden section on Gumtree – so keep your eye out for second hand materials, accessories and furniture that may help you to save some money, or some across a unique find – it’s a great place to start sourcing materials.

Bathrooms

‘Most people are aware that bathrooms are one of the most expensive rooms to renovate. A tired, outdated bathroom can really turn a buyer off,’ the couple said.

‘If your bathroom is water tight and plumbing intact, there are small changes that can make a big difference to how the room looks.

‘For example, replacing old tapware, updating towel rails and accessories, freshening up tiles using paint, and the use of a feature mirror. We’ve done this in bathrooms before by making mirror frames using recycled timber.’

Living Area

‘The ultimate goal is to ensure that when people walk into your living space, they can imagine themselves relaxing and entertaining in there,’ the duo said.

‘A great place to start is by giving the walls a fresh coat of paint. A statement piece of furniture will add intrigue and character.

‘This could be a gorgeous up-cycled coffee table as an example. An oversized mirror is a great way to give the illusion of space and bounce light around a room.’

Landscaping

‘A neat and tidy front entrance will ensure the first impression is one of a neat and tidy home,’ the pair said.

‘Start by giving your yard a good tidy, including pruning trees and removing weeds. Hedges are a great way to dress up a front yard and also provide privacy.

‘Ensure there is a clear and inviting path to the front door – you could use paving, stepping stones, decking or tiling an existing concrete path.’

Kyal and Kara top tips to buy second hand materials for home

Kyal and Kara – who teamed up with Gumtree to help Australians renovate their homes – explained how the second hand economy was a great place to start sourcing materials.

‘Buying second hand is a great way to create a unique look for your home that can’t be found anywhere else – and it helps the environment,’ the pair said.

1. Keep an open mind

You can always make things unique to your style. Upcycling can be as simple as painting, sanding or upholstering – but you can always add your own features.

2. Think outside the box

Maybe a ladder is better used as an indoor plant stand or an antique oven as a storage space? Use your imagination and you’ll find gems everywhere.

3. Keep searching

Don’t give up after your first search. There are tens of thousands of second hand items being listed on Gumtree for sale every day. Expand your search area. It’s great when you find something local. But if you’re after real gems, you need to be willing to go the extra distance to find them.

4. Try listing

You can list almost everything and anything! We often have left over building materials and people are genuinely stoked to pick up a bargain for their own home renovations.
