The cruel editing trick that left Abbie Chatfield exposed to trolling during The Bachelor premiere 

Abbie Chatfield became a laughing stock on Wednesday when she seemingly failed to understand Matt Agnew’s profession on The Bachelor. 

After he revealed he was an astrophysicist, the contestant quickly responded, ‘I’m a Gemini!’, leaving Matt looking puzzled. 

Speaking to News.com.au on Thursday, the 23-year-old said the scene was unfairly edited and that her remark – which was actually a joke – was taken out of context. 

‘He absolutely understood that it was a joke,’ she explained, clarifying that she made the comment to try and break the ice with laughter. 

‘Obviously, a lot more happened off camera, and Matt and I had a really good laugh about it at the time.’ 

However, on television the scene was cut together to suggest Matt was not in on the joke, and left baffled by her response.

‘He absolutely understood that it was a joke,’ said Abbie, who responded she ‘was a Gemini’ after Matt explained he worked as an astrophysicist

‘Erm, yeah…,’ he said afterwards as the show cut to him doing a piece to camera alone, which was filmed at a later date.  

In the next frame, the show then cut back to Matt and Abbie’s first meeting, with him putting her at ease and responding, ‘I’m a Leo’, before the next girl arrived.

Much to Abbie’s dismay, the clip has been heavily promoted in trailers for weeks.  

After going viral and gaining over 10 million views on Twitter alone, she explained: ‘I was absolutely mortified, and I was really upset.’

Speaking to Nova 96.9’s Smallzy’s Surgery on Tuesday, Matt, 32, also insisted that the footage had been taken out of context.

‘She is very clever, very witty and she loves to wind me up and that’s something very evident there with the joke she landed with the Gemini call,’ Matt said. 

‘I think some of the public opinion of that particular interaction has been taken out of context,’ he added.

Matt clarified that Abbie was only joking when she pretended not to know the difference between astrophysics and astrology.
